SULFUR GRANULES –  SULPHUR LUMPS

Sulfur is a key agricultural and industrial raw material, deemed a strategic product due to its multifaceted properties. Odourless and tasteless, it is a polyvalent nonmetal, primarily found as yellow crystals, derived from sulphide and sulphate. It is the thirteenth most prevalent element in the earth’s crust and is obtained either through mining in its elemental form, a method which has seen a decrease in the last decade to less than 2% of global production, or as a by-product of the sweetening process in oil and gas production.

Sulphur is the primary ingredient in the production of sulphuric acid, the most widely used chemical in the world. This acid is heavily relied on by the chemical and manufacturing industries as an intermediary in many processes. Additionally, the fertilizer industry uses sulphuric acid to create phosphates, nitrogen, potassium, and sulphate fertilizers.

The Versatile Uses of Sulfur

Sulfur is used in a variety of ways, from the direct production of carbon disulfide for the manufacture of cellophane and rayon, to vulcanization of rubber, bleaching of paper and preserving dried fruit. It is also a key component in surfactants and detergents and can be found in fertilizers and a range of industrial products such as plastics, paper, paint and more. On a large scale, calcium sulfate, otherwise known as gypsum, is mined for use in Portland cement and fertilizers, with 100 million tonnes of the substance mined each year. Sulfur is also increasingly used as a component of fertilizers in agriculture.

The demand for sulfur is escalating due to the rising requirement from the fertilizer manufacturing sector and its use in vulcanization of rubber. Additionally, with the fall of crude prices, refineries across the globe are expanding capacity and undertaking other brownfield activities, further driving up demand. Additionally, elemental sulfur is used as a major component in the vulcanization process to manufacture rubber, which is adding to the growth of the global sulfur industry. However, stringent environmental regulations that restrict the usage of sulfur and the high costs of mining are hindering the market growth.

The global sulfur market is segmented based on end-user applications, including agrochemicals, chemical processing, metal manufacturing, petroleum refining, and others. In 2016, the agrochemical industry had the largest share of sulfur consumption. It is anticipated that the healthy growth of the phosphate fertilizer market will drive the global sulfur market during the forecast period.

Geographically, the market has been segmented into North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East & Africa, with Asia-Pacific representing the largest market in terms of consumption and production of sulfur. Of this region, China has been identified as a major producer of sulfur and sulfuric acid and currently accounts for more than a third of the global sulfur trade. This group is able to provide sulfur of the highest quality in two forms – granule and lump.
